The central day of intensification will be next August 24, when More than 3,000 vaccination points will be set up across the country. At these points, 22 vaccines will be offered that protect against more than 30 diseases, without barriers to membership or immigration status.
Vaccination coverage in the country has not reached the levels necessary to protect infants and reduce the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases in the general community. By July, a minimum compliance of 55.4% was expected, but only 50.4% of children under 1 year of age have received the third dose of the pentavalent vaccine.
Furthermore, only 47.7% of 1-year-old children have been vaccinated against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and 48.5% of 5-year-old children have not received their corresponding booster doses.

The Expanded Immunization Program (EPI) estimates that 242,226 girls and boys under 6 years of age have pending vaccinations for their age. Faced with this situation, the Ministry of Health is launching the Vaccination Intensification Plan in Colombia with the aim of guaranteeing the protection of the population through vaccination. This strategy will be implemented during the rest of the year, with central vaccination days each month.
Recent studies have shown that, in its 50 years of existence, the Expanded Program on Immunization has saved approximately 154 million lives worldwide and has contributed to people leading healthy lives free of disabling conditions or vaccine-preventable diseases in adulthood. Despite this success, Vaccination results for 2024 are below expectations in the national territory.

“The lack of vaccination increases the risk of contracting preventable diseases such as measles, polio, yellow fever and covid-19, among others. This risk has been corroborated by multiple epidemiological alerts in the region,” the Ministry noted.
