The Ministry of Equality It was one of the promises made by President Gustavo Petro during the campaign. Likewise, there was talk that Francia Márquez, current vice president, would be the leader of this new ministry.

According to Petro, the three immediate objectives of said portfoliowould:
1. Achieve salary equality between men and women.
2. Recognize the time of work in the home valid for the pension
3. Vital income: half the minimum wage for the mother who is the head of the family.
“I will work for the equality of women in Colombia”, said the vice president. On the role that this new portfolio will have in the incoming government, Francia Márquez explained: “We want women to have economic autonomy, for women to have political empowerment, for women to have guaranteed rights. We want equality and opportunities for youth.”
The vice president announced, in the last few hours, that The bill was ready to be filed before Congress. For now, the date for this process has not been defined. “In terms of equality, there is no institutional framework that really deals with this issue. The ministry will do it,” he assured in the dialogue with Caracol Radio.

He explained that the Vice Presidency is creating the content to achieve that goal and guarantee equality for “women, youth, excluded regions. Equality for ethnic peoples, for people with disabilities, for the LGTBIQ+ population. That means a restructuring of the State.”
Regarding the tasks that the portfolio will carry out, he stated that will develop a work for equal rights for women.
“We are 52% of the population but still the patriarchy and machismo continue to violate the rights of women, that is one of the tasks of the Ministry is to advance public policies that allow women the guarantees of their rights,” said Márquez .
