The species identified since October 2024 in the corregimiento of Nueva Venice, municipality of Site Nuevo (Magdalena), generates concern due to its rapid propagation in an ecosystem that houses about 4,000 inhabitants and considered one of the most relevant in the Colombian Caribbean.
The environmental agency reported that It will call in an extraordinary way to the National Technical Committee of Invasive Species to perform a risk analysis and consolidate technical information, scientific and cartographic on this plant.

According to the entity, the ‘Hydrilla Verticillata’ is cataloged as an invader in more than 40 countries and its arrival in the national territory could occur through the illegal trade of aquarium species. Its presence in Colombia is concentrated in warm climate areas, below 500 meters high.
