Ministry of Defense: New Standard forces the Armed Forces to track ammunition from their purchase to use

He Ministry of Defense (Mindef) approved a new directive that forces Armed forces to track the ammunition and explosives that they acquire, from the moment of purchase to their final use or elimination. The norm seeks to strengthen the control of this war material and guarantee its safe handling.

The provision, called the General Directive for the Management of Munitions and Explosives, establishes rules for all phases of the Life Cycle of the ammunition. This includes the calculation of needs, the acquisition, the storage, the distribution, the use in operations and its final disposal when they cease to be useful.

As part of this reform, Mindef demands that each executing body, joint command, army, navy and air force, adopt standardized processes for inventories, transfer and custody of the material. In this way, it seeks to avoid losses, accidents or deviations to the illegal market.

In addition, a management computer system will be implemented that will allow each ammunition and explosive to be registered in a single database, facilitating supervision and real -time monitoring by the authorities of the defense sector.

Permanent supervision and control

The directive also provides the periodic inspection of powder and scarves where the war material is stored. These supervision visits will allow verifying safety conditions, inventories and compliance with protection measures to prevent accidents.

To ensure traceability, each military unit must establish procedures that allow identifying the route of ammunition: since they enter the stores, through their transport and employment, to their elimination or destruction.

The Ministry of Defense said that the Standard incorporates international technical guidelines on ammunition (IATG), a set of standards that guide the safe management of explosives in several countries. With this, Peru seeks to align to recommended control practices globally.

This measure is part of the strategic plan for the management of small weapons, ammunition and explosives, approved in 2024. With its application, MINDEF ensures that the Armed Forces will have a modern control system that reinforces national security and transparency in the use of weapons.
