The Ministry of Health declared epidemiological alert and instructed active epidemiological surveillance, as anticipation of the eventual arrival of monkeypox in the country. To this end, it prepared a manual to unify the procedures of the nine Headquarters, according to its owner, Jeyson Auza, at a press conference.
“We cannot allow anxiety and fear to be generated before the possibility of a suspicious case”, he affirmed. He also explained that the epidemiological alert has to do with being attentive to the occurrence of a case.
The authority stated that monkeypox or monkeypox does not present complications and that it is a self-limited disease. Although there is no specific vaccine, the minister explained that the human varicella vaccine gives a certain level of protection. He clarified that this is no longer available since the 1980s.
“As a Ministry we are taking the necessary precautions. At this time, no instance, neither national nor international, recommends vaccination,” he warned.
The manual that has been delivered to the Headquarters contains the necessary information to identify the suspected, probable and confirmed cases, as well as the steps to take to take samples and to which laboratories should be sent, and how to proceed to confirm or rule out the diagnosis, as mentioned by the authority.
“At the moment there is a threat that means concern; but we cannot neglect the possibility of occurrence of cases”, Auza pointed out.
Among the warning signs, the authority referred: fever, headache, muscle pain and back pain, swollen glands. He also asked to pay attention if the person was in countries where the disease currently exists, in the previous 21 days.
