After the preventive arrest of former president Jair Bolsonarothe chief minister of the Secretariat of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffman, said this Saturday (22) that Jair Bolsonaro’s arrest strictly follows the rites of due legal process observed by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) at each stage of the criminal action against the attempted coup d’état in Brazil.
“Minister Alexandre de Moraes’ decision is based on the real risks of the leader of the coup organization fleeing, as his conviction is imminent and his sentence will be served.”
According to her, Moraes also took into account the background of a process marked by violent attempts to coerce the courts, such as the Magnitsky tariff and sanctions. “In democracy, justice is fulfilled”, concluded the minister.
Also on social media, the minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, Guilherme Boulos, said that “no one is above democracy”.
“No one can betray the country with impunity. May Bolsonaro’s arrest for an attempted coup d’état represent a great milestone in our history: Dictatorship never again!”, said Boulos.
A day before the former president’s arrest, Boulos had already commented on his social network about the recent escape of other Bolsonaro supporters. “They fled Brazil to escape jail”, citing the cases of Carla Zambelli (PL-SP), Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) and recently, Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ). “In addition to being traitors, they are cowards. Anyone has any doubt that Jair would have fled if he hadn’t been under house arrest”, he questioned an hour earlier, on the X network.
Prison
Bolsonaro’s preventive detention was carried out in compliance with decision by STF minister, Alexandre de Moraesdue to the call for a vigil, this Saturday, near the residence where the former president is under house arrest.
According to Moraes, the meeting could cause turmoil and facilitate a possible escape attempt by the defendant. The minister also said that, in the early hours of the morning, an attempt was made to violate the electronic ankle monitor.
The former president’s custody hearing is scheduled for tomorrow (23). The defense says it will appeal.
Sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison in the criminal action of Core 1 of the coup plot. Bolsonaro and the other defendants could have their sentences carried out in the coming weeks.
Bolsonaro had been under house arrest since August 4, determined after non-compliance with precautionary measures already established by the STF. He was wearing an electronic ankle bracelet and was prohibited from accessing embassies and consulates, from maintaining contact with ambassadors and foreign authorities and from using social networks, directly or indirectly, including through third parties.
