At the opening of the 6th National Conference on the Rights of the Elderlyministers Macaé Evaristo, of Human Rights and Citizenship and Márcia Lopes, of Women, on Tuesday (16), in Brasília (DF), defended the importance of violations against the elderly being reported by society. The conference continues until Friday (19).
Authorities highlighted that there are more than 35 million elderly people in Brazil who need a safety net.
“In this effort, we guarantee priority in responding to reports of violence against elderly people at the National Human Rights Ombudsman’s Office,” said Macaé Evaristo.
Reports can be made via Dial 100. The minister highlighted that the aging of the Brazilian population is a social achievement and that it requires responses from the State, care, public services and guarantees of rights.
Minister Márcia Lopes announced, at the event, the creation of the national forum for elderly women.
“Elderly people demand dignity, respect and access to public policies,” he stated. She highlighted the need to overcome the scourges of society for a section of the population that requires protection.
Inequalities
Macaé Evaristo pointed out that significant differences persist between elderly women and men. She added that white elderly people receive, on average, 65% more than black and brown elderly people.
“Elderly women with higher education are three times more likely to remain in the job market than women of the same age, without education or with incomplete primary education,” said Macaé.
The national secretary for the rights of elderly people, Alexandre da Silva, understands that the country has evolved in guaranteeing rights, even in a scenario “full of challenges”.
The event, according to him, should be about listening in order to highlight the problems and violations that occur in all regions of the country.
