Minister Tohá rules out more pardons and asks the opposition “to agree on this effort that we are making in security”

After President Gabriel Boric addressed on Friday afternoon the pardons he granted to 13 people -12 sentences in the context of acts of violence of the social outbreak and the ex-front Jorge Mateluna- the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, said that it was a personal decision of the President.

“Since this is a very personal prerogative of the President, similar to when presidents make cabinet changes, it doesn’t go anywhere, it is his own decision that the President of the Republic makes consciously, this has not been the subject of prior conversations with the opposition,” said the minister in Chilevision.

Regarding the opposition’s reactions to the pardon, Carolina Tohá called for continued work on security challenges.

“I understand that regarding the decision that the President made, there may be statements at first like the ones that were heard, but I also understand that this depends on the hours or the days and that we sit down again because the security challenges are not going to disappear and the need to work together continues to be essential, the agreements we have cannot be wasted,” he said.

In addition, he added that the President’s announcement was a decision that had already been announced previously.

“When the people elected him, they knew that he had a clear statement on this issue,” said the minister.

Along the same lines, he stated that “the decision made by the President obeys a look to leave behind the breakdown that was the outbreak and that leaving it behind is going to need many more elements where we are going to need to agree.”

“Part of leaving the outbreak behind is agreeing on a tax reform to better cover social rights, it is agreeing on a constitutional process, it is also this effort that we are making in security,” he added.

In this sense, he mentioned that “organized crime is more complex than common crime and requires a more coordinated and articulated thing on the part of the State, so the PDI, Carabineros, Prosecutor’s Office, Internal Revenue Service sit in these councils to coordinate the action and exchange information and finally has a budget that is what was approved in 2023”.
