Haiti. The Minister of Public Health, Daniel Rivera, said yesterday that since the entry into force of the new immigration measures that seek to stop the entry of illegal immigrants to the Dominican Republic, the number of irregular Haitian women in labor who go to health centers to give to light their children.
At a press conference, the official highlighted that the influx of pregnant women from the neighboring nation decreased by 30 percent in hospitals located in urban areas and 10 percent in those located in the border area.
“It is going down at an accelerated rate because no one is crossing (…), they cross because it is cheaper to come to the Dominican Republic,” he said.
He pointed out that the provision adopted by the National Migration Council has allowed Dominican women to be more comfortable and that all the women who go to clinical establishments in search of health services have a better quality of care.
He added that the massive influx of pregnant Haitian women is an old problem, but in recent years the growth has been enormous.
He stated that those who arrive at hospitals through emergency rooms continue to receive quality medical care just like the Dominican women.
According to the Global Democracy and Development Foundation (Funglode), from 2010 to 2017 the foreigners book declared 123 thousand 980 babies of mothers of Haitian origin.
