The Minister of the Interior, Izkia Sichescommunicated during this day that his portfolio is working on a “policy against organized crime” due to the increase in drug trafficking and drug consumption in the country.
In a special session of the Senate aimed at “analyzing the mental health situation in the country derived from the growing problem of drug trafficking, as well as the State’s response in therapy and rehabilitation,” Siches announced the measure. In the instance, she was accompanied electronically by the Ministers of Social Development and Family, Jeanette Vega; and Health, Maria Begona Yarza.

“Drug trafficking and problematic drug use are pains in our society that affect the most vulnerable people, women and especially communities in the most deprived sectors, impacting the quality of life in neighborhoods, deepening mental health problems,” said the head of the Interior.
Along the same lines, Siches indicated that they have three challenges in mind for this problem: the need to strengthen prevention, have treatment programs for problematic drug use, and confront drug trafficking and organized crime.
Regarding the last point, the Minister of the Interior stated that “one of the pillars of our government due to the violence associated in many of the neighborhoods of our country, where criminal gangs operate with a high firepower, generating networks and recruiting people for their distribution circuits.
“Drug trafficking mutates rapidly, both in the ways in which crimes are committed and in the ways they are used to launder money that is obtained illegally,” he added. To which Siches assured that the Government wants to confront “resolutely this distribution chain.”
In addition, the Secretary of State reported that “our portfolio is working on the design of a national policy against organized crime, in which the fight against drug trafficking is a fundamental axis.”
“The Ministry of the Interior and Public Security coordinates actions to disrupt the drug distribution chain throughout the country together with Carabineros, the Investigative Police, Directemar, among others. To contribute to the work carried out by these institutions at borders in collaboration with customs and Gendarmerie, this year we expect to transfer around 2,700 million pesos to strengthen this work,” he concluded.
