The Governor of the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic (BCRD), Héctor Valdez Albizu, received a visit from the Minister of Culture, Milagros Germán, who asked the institution to update the study on the contribution of culture to the gross domestic product (GDP). ).
The first edition of this study was published in 2016. Germán also requested that the relevance of the Culture Satellite Account (CSC), with more recent data, be used to measure the contribution of this sector to the national economy.
During the meeting held at the BCRD, Valdez Albizu showed his willingness to proceed with the proposal, stating that “the construction of credible indicators on this activity is essential for understanding the cultural processes of society and its development.” He pointed out that “this contribution with statistical data is a key instrument for creating strategic plans in terms of cultural policies, as well as in the design of tools that guide decision-making.”
For her part, Minister Milagros Germán pointed out that the availability of the results of a cultural consumption survey will make it possible to make available to the international community and cooperation agencies, information on Dominican culture of a high technical and professional level, which will serve to in turn to make comparisons of our indicators and statistics with those of other countries in the region and the world”.
The first report on the results of the Culture Satellite Account, published by the BCRD in 2016, indicates that in order to precisely define which cultural activities should be considered by each sector of the cultural field, the methodological guide for the implementation of the Satellite Accounts of Culture in Ibero-America (CAB 2015) adopts the model of the cultural cycle of the Cultural Statistics Framework of UNESCO.
