Minister of the MOP, Rafael Sabonge makes a tour of damages in the Highlands, after the passage of Hurricane Julia

A tour of the points that were affected by the heavy rains caused by Hurricane Julia recorded last weekend in the districts of Cerro Punta and Paso Ancho, in Tierras Altas, in the province of Chiriquí, was carried out this Thursday by the minister of Public Works, Rafael Sabonge.

During the visit, damage was observed at the entrance to the community of Las Cumbres, Las Filipinas, Alto Pineda and the collapse of a section of the main road in the Cerro Punta corregimiento.

In addition, damages caused in the Chiriquí Viejo river and the La Bruja creek, where the undermining of the surrounding houses and agricultural farms of the communities of La Florentina, Bella Vista, los Cantares and Arco Iris was recorded.

According to Sabonge, deeper and more lasting works solutions are being sought. Likewise, at critical points, the construction of rainwater caissons will be considered to avoid a recurrence of this type of situation.

“In the case of La Florentina, it is a very sensitive point in which it is necessary to carry out more scientific studies with water, hydraulic and environmental specialists to determine what type of work should be carried out in the tributary of the Chiriquí Viejo river and avoid changes in the flow unexpectedly,” Sabonge said.
