Minister of the MOP arrives in Chepo to meet with protesters who demand the construction of highways

The Minister of Public Works, Rafael Sabonge, arrived in Chepo this Friday morning to meet with residents and other protesters, who demand the construction of highways and roads in the province of Darién.

The protests have been registered since Wednesday causing clashes between residents of the regions and nearby communities.

On Thursday night an incident was reported, where the protesters even attacked the vehicle in which the governor of Darien was traveling.

From the early hours of this Friday, in the Ipetí area, in the Madugandí region, people staged a confrontation with Crowd Control agents, throwing stones, sticks and bottles at them.

Later, the agents took control of the road.

Sabonge will listen to the list of demands from the demonstrators, high-ranking Darién authorities, organized groups and civil society called the Cañita, Tortí, Darién Highway Movement.

“The head of the MOP said on TVN Noticias that the closure is unfortunate, since they had been talking by phone with residents and local authorities, because on several occasions they have disclosed the project from Cañita-Agua Fría-Yaviza.

While the meeting is taking place, the protesters will keep the road closed, waiting for there to be white smoke and an understanding between the parties is achieved.
