Security in different communities in the border areas with Colombia were reinforced, due to the volume of migrants who are passing through, as reported by the Minister of Public Security, Juan Manuel Pino, during a work tour in the province of Darién, noting that already it is on the trail of groups dedicated to robbing migrants, who only seek to pass through Panama to the United States.
“We have flown over the area where the incidents have occurred, we are working based on the descriptions given to us by those affected, who heard people with Colombian, Venezuelan and Panamanian accents with indigenous features,” said the Minister.
The head of Public Security pointed out that instructions have been issued to reinforce security at the points where these events against migrants have been recorded, and there have been meetings with the general chiefs and zailas of the regions, to work together and give information about these cases.
To date, more than 134,000 migrants have entered Panama, surpassing last year’s figure where 133,726 passed through.
In the months of July, August and so far in September, there has been a marked increase in migrants, who are mostly people from Venezuela, Africa and Haiti.
Panama, in response to international agreements and commitments on human rights, has offered health care, accommodation and food to the migrant population.
Minister Pino, the director of the National Border Service, Oriel Ortega, and the director of the National Naval Air Service, Jeremías Urieta, also toured the reception camps in Metetí, Darién, to supervise the care given to migrants. .
