Héctor Rodríguez, Minister of Education, issued an alert about the dangers of viral challenges on social networks, after the recent death of two teenagers and the poisoning of more than 300 people in Venezuela, due to the alleged practice of chroming, which consists of inhaling toxic substances
The Minister of Education, Héctor Rodríguez, expressed his concern this Monday about the dangers that viral challenges on social networks represent for children and adolescents in Venezuela. The alert comes after the tragic death of two young people due to these challenges and a recent mass poisoning that affected more than 300 people, including students, teachers and healthcare personnel.
In a statement released through Instagram, Rodríguez stressed that adolescents are highly vulnerable to the provocations of viral challenges, which, according to the minister, are promoted by social networks that seem to reward scandalous behavior, in addition to limiting the development of reflective thinking and analysis of consequences.
«The recent events have left a significant number of injuries. Today, unfortunately, two young people have left this landscape forever; Everything indicates that the cause is in social networks and these challenges that have the purpose of causing suffering to families»said Rodríguez.
The minister urgently called on the authorities to thoroughly investigate the cases that resulted in deaths and mass poisoning that occurred in several schools in different states of the country.
To the directors and teachers, he asked «be more attentive than ever» to accompany young people; and to families, «to assertively supervise and guide their sons/daughters, protect them from the media, and ensure proper family connection».
In your opinion, this is a situation «that must hurt the entire society»and should call for deep reflection and the search for justice.
«All Venezuelan families must show solidarity today and face a problem that we have at home, and that we cannot continue to ignore.»he highlighted.
Rodríguez commented that one of the most serious incidents was the case of a 12-year-old girl in the state of Miranda, who allegedly died after ingesting pills as part of a viral challenge. These trends, such as the so-called chromingwhich consists of inhaling toxic substances, are being investigated by the Scientific, Criminal and Criminal Investigation Corps (Cicpc).
