Minister of Education: «The historical debt of teachers will be paid in this Government»

The Minister of Education, Marco Antonio Ávila, assured that the historical debt of the teachers “will be paid in this government.”

in conversation with Chilevisionthe Secretary of State asserted that an “agreement and a payment date” will be reached and explained that “a work table has already been established with the College of Teachers.”

“Today we are facing this solution with an additional element, which is a ruling by the International Court for a special group of teachers from a region of the country, where the State is obliged to provide a solution,” he added.

Minister Ávila explained that “if one combines that with the intention of our government to move forward, it is likely that we will hopefully reach the end of the year or the beginning of next year with a rather clear solution, which we understand will not be difficult to process. in Parliament because all the deputies, deputies and senators know this story and know that it is a debt of the State with its teachers”.

It is worth mentioning that the so-called “historical debt” originated in the context of the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, when the administration of public education was transferred from the central level to the Municipalities of the country. This process implied that the teaching staff was subject to the Labor Code and would be governed by the regulations applicable to the private sector, for which they did not receive a special non-taxable allowance for teachers dependent on the Ministry of Education, which would be in effect from 1 January 1981.
