Minister of Education confirms that classes will restart on Monday the 12th

The Minister of Education confirmed through a video published through the Telegram platform that school activities will restart next Monday the 12th in all basic and secondary education subsystems in the country.

The Minister of Education Héctor Rodríguez confirmed that this Monday, January 12, classes will restart in all basic and secondary education subsystems throughout the country. “The Second Pedagogical Moment of this year begins and we do so aware that we must guarantee the fundamental right to education”Rodríguez said in a video published through the Telegram platform.

Rodríguez ratified the return to school activities, but asked to “protect school communities with unity, collaboration and discipline” in reference to the social and political context following the bombing action by US forces, which occurred in the city of Caracas in the early hours of Saturday, January 3.

He called on mothers, fathers, teachers and the family in general to “contain, calm and listen” to each child and adolescent and be available to validate the feeling derived from the events of January 3 and offer them tools to manage them in the best way.

To the teachers, Rodríguez asked for “solidarity, humanity, compassion, empathy, very high professionalism, and very high capacity” to support and guide children and young people. “We know how to do it and we must do it, because our first task is to protect each boy, each girl, each young person. School, high school, as well as the family, are the safest place for them.“, the place of love, the place of possibilities, the place where they can express their concerns and where by nature they will find answers, interaction, human bond,” said Rodríguez.

Complex context

Cecodap, an organization that defends the rights of children and adolescents, issued a statement regarding the information issued by the Ministry of Education, in which it states that although the school calendar, since December of last year, set the return to classrooms for January 12, 2026, “the reality of the country today imposes a complex context.”

The validity of the State of External Shock, added to the growing military presence, transportation limitations and risks to citizen security, create an environment that challenges the minimum conditions for school life.

The organization points out that fear, uncertainty and doubt regarding the safety of children and adolescents “are not exaggerations or resistance to the right to education: they are responsible expressions of care in the face of an exceptional context that demands clear answers and real guarantees.”

«From Cecodap We deeply value the beginning of the school year and recognize that children and adolescents need their school not only as a space for academic learning, but as a safe, protective and emotional environment.; fundamental for their integral development, their emotional well-being and their right to grow up in conditions of dignity. Therefore, in this context of uncertainty, the question about returning to in-person classes cannot be answered automatically or generally,” they point out.
