The Minister of Education (Mineduc), Marco Antonio Ávila, referred to the cancellation of the educational debt and the Credit with State Guarantee (CAE), assuring that the measure will be “sustainable over time, adequate and with a lot of fiscal responsibility.” .
The head of the Ministry of Education has emphasized “advancing towards a fairer and comprehensive quality education system”, with a view to responding to the challenges of the 21st century for students. The Secretary of State announced changes to the system on April 6. “We will alleviate the heavy backpack for educational debtors, but also for the State, through the end of the CAE and the cancellation of the educational debt,” he stated on that occasion.

Minister Ávila reiterated the Executive’s position and maintained that the debt “has always been a very heavy backpack for many people, since it is the result of bad public policy that has played with education as an engine of social mobility.” In this sense, in an interview with The Mercurysaid that as a Government “we have a commitment that is to advance in the cancellation of this educational debt, and we have established that it is fair, progressive and gradual”.
The Secretary of State maintained that this reparation policy, with respect to the cancellation of the CAE, “in some way is going to affect all debtors.” And he commented to the morning paper that this is an initial work that they are starting with different actors, groups of debtors and also with the Budget Directorate and the Ministry of Finance. The latter, according to him, he specified, “because any response that we give around this has to be sustainable over time, adequate and with a lot of fiscal responsibility.”
“We are working on this proposal, it has to be very serious in terms of responding to these high expectations, but there is no doubt that it is a commitment,” said Professor Ávila.
Asked about how people will be prevented from defaulting on their debt, with more and more defaulters after the presidential election, the Minister of Education stated that “no serious educational policy, and especially those that have to do with reparation, can be advanced if it is not well prepared, and in that we want to be super responsible and serious”.
Finally, Marco Antonio Ávila pointed out: “This is interministerial work and we want citizens to be calm because we have a commitment, but the characteristics will be communicated at the right time.”
