Minister of Economy publishes summary of the tax reform proposal

Isa Contreras points out that as it stands, the proposal would raise just over 120 billion pesos, equivalent to just over 1.5% of GDP, in an article published this Tuesday in the newspaper El Caribe.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. (October 2024). The Minister of Economy, Planning and Development, Pável Isa Contreras, stated that taxation is a key piece in the effort to achieve more development and well-being for more people, because it is through it that they try to solve problems and face collective challenges. .

“Taxation seeks to raise the necessary resources to pay for issues of public interest such as justice, public transportation, security, water and road infrastructure,” said the minister, in an article published this Tuesday in the newspaper The Caribbean.

The economist and researcher maintains that this is why the fiscal modernization proposal proposed by the government puts forward the critical problems it wants to face and that it is not possible to do so with the available resources.

He detailed that, starting in 2025, he proposes investing 35 billion in the Santo Domingo Integrated Transportation System, especially in the metropolitan train, to dignify and streamline urban mobility.

Likewise, it indicated nearly 11 billion to finance the first level of health care, in order to strengthen disease prevention and reduce the time spent by households seeking services and the expense they incur.

In addition, 13 billion in citizen security, to significantly increase the number of police officers and their academic training, build 116 new detachments and renovate 300; also acquire technological equipment and systems.

In turn, 11 billion to place city councils in the capacity to improve public services such as waste collection, construction of road and community infrastructure and improvement of emergency response services and disaster responses.

Also 18 billion to invest in the electricity sector, in order to improve distribution infrastructure and service, confront fraud, rationalize consumption and reduce distribution losses. “This will allow us to reduce subsidy resources to allocate them to public services and infrastructure,” he said.
