Defense Minister, Jorge Chavez Crestcondemned the fire that occurred on Wednesday at a courthouse and a police station in Macusani, in the Puno region, by protesters calling for the resignation of the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte.
During an official ceremony, Chávez told Canal N that he had to “deplore and condemn the incident that took place in the Judiciary and the Macusani police station,” acts that he described as “extreme violence” and bordering on “criminal acts.”
Hundreds of protesters gathered on Wednesday in the square of the city of Macusani, in the province of Carabaya, in Puno, to join the protests calling for the resignation of Boluarte and when the Police arrived there was a confrontation with the mobilized.
As a result of that clash, the death of a woman in Macusani was reported, which inflamed the protesters and they went, at the end of the afternoon, to the judicial headquarters and the police station to set fire to both premises.
Chávez explained that, “in the event of the presence of 2,300 people and another 200 who have fueled these extremist acts, we have sent a ship to extract the personnel,” who left the area in a helicopter at night.
“Yesterday (Wednesday) a person and an unborn child died on the Panamericana Norte, who are responsible for each of these acts?” said the minister, referring to two other deaths on Wednesday as a result of protest demonstrations in Peru.
Asked about the security measures in Lima, as a result of the great mobilization called for this Thursday, Chávez said that there are close to 12,000 police officers displaced in the city and that the armed forces are developing actions to “protect critical assets,” such as the water treatment plant of the Sedapal company and the La Pampilla refinery, among other points.
In addition, he indicated that there was “a violent group” trying to reach the telecommunications antennas located in Morro Solar, in the Chorrillos district, to “prevent freedom of expression” and communications on this day.
