Minister Muñoz rules out public transport fare hike “for now”

Minister Muñoz rules out public transport fare hike “for now”

Public transport tickets have not increased since October 2019, due to the social outbreak, and on the table there is a proposal signed by parliamentarians from Renovación Nacional (RN) with which they seek to eliminate the specific tax on gasoline for one year. This at a time when fuel prices have skyrocketed due to the economic effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In this context, before a possible rise in the rates of collective locomotion in Chile, the Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Juan Carlos Muñoz, ruled it out “for now”.

The Secretary of State told Third that “for now a rate increase is not contemplated and, in the event of an instruction in this line by the panel of experts, it will be analyzed considering all the factors that such a measure has and not only the financial field.”

“If we have learned anything over these years,” he added, “it is that, faced with complex issues, there are no simple solutions.”

The Minister of Transportation also advanced the “Zero+Zero” project of President Gabriel Boric’s program, which seeks to provide a free and pollution-free service. Minister Muñoz explained that “this would allow people to get on and off vehicles more quickly. The idea is,” he added, “in these four years, to make a pilot plan to test it in different contexts and, based on that , define if one would like to continue advancing along that line”.

Asked if there is any city defined to do it, Juan Carlos Muñoz stated that “it will be in regions, because definitely in the Metropolitan Region it could not be done.”
