El ministro de Energía y Minas, Jorge Montero

The Minister of Energy and Mines, Jorge Montero, minimized the environmental disaster that occurred in Talara, in Piura, which has caused considerable losses in Lobitos and has already extended to the beach of Cabo Blanco. During a press conference after the session of the Council of Ministers, he maintained that oil spills “are frequent” by massive extractive industries such as Petroperú.

“What we are doing, as of today, is monitoring and following up on the mitigation and remediation works that continue and will continue until the supervision and inspection body OEFA indicates otherwise. The beaches at this time… The La Capullana beach is now free of crude oil, the other beaches that were indicated that could be impacted have already been checked and are no longer impacted, and the sea continues to be monitored for oil residues,” said Montero.

“I want to finish by giving guarantees to all of you, to the country, that this unfortunate event, which is frequent and it must be said, in massive extractive industries these types of events usually happen, which, of course, must be properly controlled, monitored and repaired. This event, specifically at the Talara Multibuoys Terminal, has been addressed quickly and in a coordinated manner. This must be rescued,” he added.

It is important to highlight that a large number of animals died due to pollution and tourism will be affected in the summer season, which will impact the pockets of families in the area.

For his part, the Minister of the Environment, Juan Carlos Castro, said that the Executive was there “from the first moment” when the oil spill that affected the region of Talara, in Piura.

“With respect to the oil spill, which occurred on December 20, at the Multibuoys Terminal of the Talara Refinery, in the Piura region, the Executive as a whole has responded immediately with its supervisory bodies. (…) The has been executive from the first moment,” Castro told reporters.

However, the Executive itself took about a week to declare a State of Emergency for a period of 90 days in the area, when the seriousness of the ecological disaster was confirmed.
