Minister Heber inaugurated a video surveillance system with 110 cameras in Durazno and Tacuarembo

The head of the Interior attended on May 4 the start-up of 110 video surveillance cameras provided by the UPM company to reinforce the security of Durazno and Paso de los Toros. In the afternoon, he inaugurated an office of the Durazno Scientific Police, visited module 18 of the National Rehabilitation Institute and the Rural Security Departmental Base, where he received other donations.

The inauguration of the video surveillance system was held at the Durazno City Hall. There were also present the mayor Carmelo Vidalín; the National Police Director, Diego Fernández; the Police Chief of Durazno, Richard Marcenal, and the director of the UPM Paso de los Toros project, Gonzalo Giambruno.

During the press conference, Heber said that it is essential to enhance human resources. He referred to the need to increase patrols and install “eyes” in various parts of the department to guarantee the tranquility of the population. In this sense, he assured that this contribution from UPM is “very welcome”, because the new cameras will allow patrolling to be more punctual and specific.

He acknowledged that Durazno “was invaded by people from all over the country and even the world”, due to its strong job creation, which caused a greater challenge regarding security.

Then he expressed himself about the changes of authorities in the Durazno Headquarters and considered that they were to strengthen it. He explained that he is satisfied with the indicators of abatement of robberies, homicides and thefts in the department, but considered that it is necessary to deepen this task. The new deputy chief and the coordinator will enhance the work of the current management, he said.

For his part, the mayor of Durazno, Carmelo Vidalín, highlighted the work of the Ministry of the Interior to improve security in the department, as well as the support of UPM.

The high-definition security cameras are connected to the Monitoring Center of the Ministry of the Interior and located as follows: 61 in 30 places in Paso de los Toros, 34 in 14 places in the city of Durazno and 15 between the towns of Centenario and Carlos Reyes.

This project was implemented in the context of the commitments assumed by UPM for the construction of its second pulp mill. The authorities highlighted that it transcends the aforementioned structure, since the actions will remain once its construction is completed. The investment of the external works to the industrial plant of UPM amounts to 70 million dollars, highlighted the director Gonzalo Giambruno.

Subsequently, Heber observed the Unified Command Center where the 110 cameras are monitored and moved to kilometer 247 of Route 5 to visit the expanded Police Station No. 11 and receive a truck that will allow reinforcing the patrol, also donated by UPM. Finally, he visited the Plaza Artigas in Paso de los Toros, where some of the cameras are installed.

In the afternoon, the minister went to Unit 18 of the National Rehabilitation Institute (INR) in Durazno. He was received by his director, Luis Mendoza, and departmental police authorities. In the establishment there are 195 men and women deprived of liberty, and 93 members of the staff, including police officers and prison operators. He toured the bakery and orchard sectors, the cell pavilions and recreational spaces.

Next, the delegation inaugurated an office of the Durazno Scientific Police, in which 14 officials will work, and, at about 6:00 p.m., went to the Rural Security Departmental Base, where they received the donation of two trucks, a boat inflatable, a drone and night vision goggles. The supplies will be used to support security maintenance tasks in rural areas. Presidency
