Minister Grau reveals sympathy from North American businessmen with a constituent stage: «The general view that exists is to value the process»

One of the main companions of President Gabriel Boric’s tour to Canada and the United States is the Minister of Economy, Nicolás Grau.

In a trip that was marked by the President’s first international intervention before various nations, the Secretary of State held a series of meetings with different local businessmen in order to promote investment in Chile.

This was stated by Grau to The Mercurywhere he delivered his first balances of the instance, pointing to the interest of the countries to invest in the country.

“The balance is very good. Canada is the second investor in Chile and the United States the first. Both are very important and I see a lot of interest in investing in Chile. Not only in new areas that generate interest, but as renewable energies conventional and with green hydrogen, but sectors that have had investments for a long time,” he said.

“This has been an opportunity for the President and for me as Minister of Economy to show what we are doing. Showing our plan and this vision of making transformations and changes but at the same time being predictable through the institutions is what a sensation of certainty to entrepreneurs that allows businesses to stand firm,” he added.

In the same line of certainties, Grau addressed the collective thinking of businessmen before the constitutional process that the country is going through, emphasizing that they see the stage with good eyes and it seems reasonable to them.

“Foreign businessmen are quite sympathetic in institutional terms to how the process went. Furthermore, what one can perceive is that they see the result of the Constitution as quite reasonable. The general view that exists is to value the process, for example, in the fact that women have participated, with the participation of indigenous peoples, something that is especially valued in a context like Canada’s,” she said.

“In addition, they find the result of that process reasonable. Not only do they appreciate that Chile has been able to resolve an extremely complex political situation in 2019 in an institutional manner, but it also seems to them to be a reasonable result,” he added.

Asked about the reason for this thought, Minister Grau declared that businessmen find the process reasonable since they compare it with other constitutions of other countries, and not the 1980 Constitution.

“I think that because they do not have as a point of reference the Constitution of 1980 in Chile, but rather the Constitution of other countries. The result of the constitutional process in Chile is quite in line with the result of other countries, it seems to them basically an average Constitution,” he said.
