Minister celebrates announcement of R$ 5.7 billion to expand airports in the country

The Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, celebrated, this Wednesday (11), what he considers to be “the largest volume of investments” in the history of Brazilian aviation, with R$5.7 billion allocated to 11 airports in the country. All airports are managed by the company Aena, the largest manager in the sector in the world.Minister celebrates announcement of R$ 5.7 billion to expand airports in the country

The airports benefiting are Congonhas (SP), Campo Grande (MS), Ponta Porã (MS) and Corumbá (MS), Santarém (PA), Marabá (PA), Carajás (PA) and Altamira (PA), in addition to Uberlândia (MG), Uberaba (MG) and Montes Claros (MG). Congonhas will receive the majority of the funding, R$2.6 billion.

In Costa Filho’s assessment, the investments announced today, added to the others already announced during the government, represent “the largest volume of investments in the history of Brazilian aviation, in such a short period of time”.

“To give you an idea, in the four years of the previous government, we had the equivalent of R$2 billion in investments in aviation, via Brazilian airports. In three years of our government, more than R$5 billion have already been invested”, said the minister.

Of this total, R$4.64 billion will be financed with support from the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (Bndes). According to him, total investments across the airport sector, including contracts already signed, will exceed R$10 billion.

The statements were made during a ceremony at Palácio do Planalto, with the presence of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, where news was announced for the Investment Plan for Expansion and Modernization of Airports.

Investment Plan

The Airport Expansion and Modernization Investment Plan foresees investments for the expansion and modernization of 11 airports managed by Aena.

“More people will be able to fly and those who already fly will have a much better experience. Democratization and improvements in the quality of air transport have a transformative effect on the economy and people’s lives. We believe in Brazil and its people”, said the President of Aena Brasil, Santiago Yus.

Yus stated that the company will work on increasing airport capacity, in addition to improving technologies, operational safety and sustainability.

Magnification

The 11 airports currently handle around 29 million passengers per year. “With the modernization and increase in operational capacity, the block will be able to receive more than 40 million passengers annually, reinforcing the internalization of air traffic and the integration between capitals and interior cities”, informed Planalto.

These investments are expected to generate around 2,800 direct and indirect jobs. After the works, there will be more than 700 new jobs.

The airport with the largest investment forecast is Congonhas. The project includes the construction of a new passenger terminal, which will be expanded from the current 40 thousand m² to 135 thousand m².

It is also planned to expand the aircraft apron and increase the number of boarding bridges (from 12 to 19). The works will result in the expansion of the airport’s commercial area to more than 20 thousand m².
