Mining: local services contracted by Antapaccay fell 73%

Antapaccay: contractors denounce attacks against their property

Small businesses and workers in the province of Espinar, in Cusco, continue to feel the effects of roadblocks and strikes, as several have been affected by the reduction in operations owned by Swiss mining company Glencore.

Only in the case of the contracting of Espinar services, this was reduced by 73%.

“The blockade of the mining corridor during the last months had a strong impact on the generation of local income for the province of Espinar, Cusco (…). In the first two months of this year, the hiring of the local labor company contracted 27% and that of local services 73%,” reported Compañía Minera Antapaccay.

The reality reported by the mining company can be observed in the disbursements for its contracting of services in the area. While they committed almost S/24 million in January of this year, in February this amount was reduced to just under S/6.4 million.

At the personnel level, it was also possible to appreciate that the number of hired workers is far from the figure of December last year.

In the last month of 2022, the mining company’s personnel that came from the province of Espinar amounted to 1,849 people, while in February of this year there were only 1,348. In other words, there were 501 people from Espinar who lost their jobs.

“38.5% of the Antapaccay workforce is from Espinar and the company contracts goods and services with more than 60 companies in the province,” the mining company specified.

Antapaccay is one of the mining operations most affected by roadblocks and strikes, as it was attacked and invaded on January 12.

The event occurred when at noon a group of people entered by force, burned two vehicles and attacked the area where the workers rest.

Data

-In 2022, Compañía Minera Antapaccay allocated S/220 million to contracting local services, an amount that will probably not exceed this year.

-Last year, Cusco received S/714 million for canons and royalties from Antapaccay corresponding to the 2021 period.
