Mining employment grew more than 10% year-on-year with a peak in lithium of 49%

Mining employment reached 36,673 jobs in June, which is equivalent to a year-on-year growth of 10.3% and reached 18 consecutive months of increase in the number of workers, with lithium as the activity with the highest increase, according to the report of the Ministry of Mining.

This monthly report prepared by the Directorate of Transparency and Mining Information analyzes the evolution of direct mining employment until June 2022, observing its composition by category, company and gender.

The report stated that During June, mining employment in Argentina reached 36,673 jobswhich represented a growth of 10.3% compared to June 2021 with the creation of 3,424 direct formal jobs in the sector, in that period.

With this level of employment in June, mining represented 0.6% of the total employment of the registered salaried private sector.

The sector marked, in this way, 18 consecutive months with year-on-year increases in the number of jobs, and has already widely exceeded the floor of 30,755 jobs that were registered during the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.

During June 2022, 11,496 jobs were registered linked to metalliferous projects in production, this item being the one with the largest amount of direct formal employment in the mining sector, accounting for 31.3% of the total.

Compared to June 2021, this item added 123 employees to its payroll, which represents an increase of 1.1% year-on-year.

The second mining sector with the most employment is services and activities related to mining, which accounted for a total of 8,210 jobs (22.4% of the total).

This item is the one that generated the most employment in absolute terms compared to June 2021, having created 1,348 jobs, marking a year-on-year increase of 19.6%.

In third place was the category of application rocks with 6,005 jobs during June 2022 (16.4% of the total). This item had a year-on-year increase of 5.8% in its payroll, which marks an increase of 331 new workers.

In fourth place was the production of non-metallic minerals with 3,222 jobs (8.8% of the total), with a year-on-year increase of 1.0%.

In fifth place was the production of fuel minerals with 2,303 jobs (6.3% of the total), marking a year-on-year increase of 6.5% with the creation of 140 new jobs in the period.

Lithium production is in sixth place with 2,188 jobs (6.0% of the total), in June it was the category of mining production with the highest year-on-year growth with 49.9%, adding 728 new jobs in the period.

In the seventh location is the production of previously unclassified minerals with 1,638 jobs (4.5% of the total) in June 2022, it had a year-on-year increase of 20.1%, which translates into the creation of 274 new jobs in the period.

In the eighth and ninth location of employment by category are the exploration and financing of metal mining and lithium with 887 (2.4% of the total) and 724 (2.0% of the total) jobs respectively in June 2022.

These items had a growth in their payroll in interannual terms of 18.6% and 74.9%, which marks the creation of 139 and 310 jobs, respectively.
