Minimum wage 2026: this is what it looked like with the increase in central and northern Mexico

In the Northern Border Free Zone, the increase will be 5%. Where the salary will go from 419.88 pesos to 440.87 pesos per day, that is, 13,409.80 pesos per month.

The smallest percentage increase in this area is due to the fact that it is already enough to cover 2.8 basic baskets. Remembering that President Claudia Sheinbaum’s goal is for the general minimum wage to cover 2.5 basic baskets in 2030.

With these increases, “we estimate that at the beginning of next year, the minimum wage may have recovered 154% of its purchasing power,” compared to 2018, said the secretary.

With the 13% increase in the general minimum wage, in 2026 it will be enough to cover the purchase of two basic baskets. In 2025, the minimum wage was only enough to cover 1.8 basic baskets.

According to the Presidency’s estimates, increases in the minimum wage will benefit 8.5 million working people in 2026. And it is estimated that 6.6 million people have escaped poverty thanks exclusively to increases in the minimum wage.
