MIAMI, United States. – The Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) reported on his social networks that on Tuesday morning two explosions occurred in a facility where war material is stored in the town of Melones, Rafael Freyre municipality, Holguín province.
According to the brief official notethe incident was caused by a fire and “does not pose a danger to the community,” although the causes are still under investigation.
Nevertheless, another note from MINFAR broadcast on national television stated that, “so far,” 1,245 people had been evacuated near the La Púa Popular Council, in Gibarawhile a commission investigated the causes of the explosions.
On the other hand, reports on social networks indicate that the military unit stored “aged ammunition,” so the detonations could continue for some time.
This type of events is not unprecedented in Holguín. In July 2020, the population was surprised by two explosions that occurred in the Velasco Popular Council (municipality of Gibara), without any deaths or significant damage being recorded.
On that occasion, the MINFAR confirmed that “several explosions had occurred in a military unit in the town of Gibara.”
Likewise, he specified that at 2:30 in the morning on Monday, July 6, detonations of ammunition stored inside a highly protected work of the Eastern Army, in the Velasco Popular Council, began to be heard.
According to the official note released at that time, this work classified aged ammunition.
