MINFAR confirms 13 missing after explosions in a military warehouse in Holguín

SLP, Mexico.- The Ministry of the Cuban Armed Forces (MINFAR) confirmed that 13 people are missing after the explosions that occurred this Tuesday in a facility where war material is stored in the town of Melones, in the Rafael Freyre municipality, in Holguín.

The note officer identified the missing, namely: Leonar Palma Matos, Carlos Carreño del Río, with the rank of major; Orlebani Tamé Torres and Yoennis Pérez Durán, second non-commissioned officers.

In addition, he then listed nine soldiers: Leinier Jorge Sánchez Franco, Frank Antonio Hidalgo Almaguer, Liander José García Oliva, Yunior Hernández Rojas, Rayme Rojas Rojas, Carlos Alejandro Acosta Silva, Brian Lázaro Rojas Long, José Carlos Guerrero García, Héctor Adrián Batista Zayas.

“Their relatives were duly informed, the Party, the Government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces pay all possible attention to this situation and continue the investigation actions at the scene of the events,” the statement concluded, without specifying the ages of the victims. until now missing.

According to the information Officially transmitted by the MINFAR, the explosions this Tuesday, January 7, in a construction site where war material is stored, were caused by a fire.

Initially, 1,245 people were evacuated near the La Púa Popular Council in Gibara, while a commission investigated the causes of the explosions.

A later update added that another 361 people residing near the site were evacuated.

When the news broke this Tuesday morning, reports on social networks indicated that the unit stored “aged ammunition,” so the detonations could continue for some time.

On Facebook, doctors residing in the Rafael Freyre municipality have called on the community to create a group of blood donors in order to offer help to those injured during the explosions, given the magnitude of the event.

“Considering the urgent situation, due to what happened in Melones, a massive blood donation has been called for tomorrow morning at the hospital Mario MunozPlease, anyone who can help, spread the word to friends and family,” wrote Dr. Tania Portelles Ávila in her networks social.

Another doctor insisted that the situation was “critical” and asked to locate volunteers and donors from each medical office to obtain blood.
