MinEducación rejected attack that left five students injured in Cauca

The minors suffered superficial injuries and are receiving comprehensive care.

The Ministry of National Education strongly condemned the events that occurred in the rural area of The Silver Plated (Cauca), where five students from the sixth and seventh grades of the Miguel Zapata Educational Institution were injured by shrapnel after an attack with explosives perpetrated by illegal armed groups using a drone.

The entity in a statement regretted what happened on October 29 and called for the children and the educational communities are not victims or part of the armed conflict in the country.

According to the Ministry of Education, the minors suffered superficial injuries and are receiving comprehensive care, both medical and socio-emotional, by the school counselor assigned to the institution.

He said that despite the serious incident, the educational community of Bello Horizonte resumed classes normally on October 31, and the establishment’s infrastructure did not suffer structural damagewhich made it possible to guarantee the continuity of the right to education.

The Ministry expressed its solidarity with the families, students, teachers and managers affected by the attack, and categorically rejected any act of violence that threatens against the life, integrity and rights of girls, boys and adolescents in the country.

“The school must always be a safe space, free of violence and conducive to learning, coexistence and hope,” the statement states.

Likewise, the educational portfolio reiterated its commitment to the protection of school environments, and reaffirmed that education cannot be the target of armed conflicts or be interrupted by violence.

The Ministry made an urgent call to respect life and education as fundamental pillars of society, and reaffirmed its willingness to continue working in an articulated manner with local authorities, the educational community and government entities. State in preventing violent events and strengthening protective environments for all students in the country.

This fact adds to the growing concern about the presence of armed groups in rural areas of Cauca, where clashes and attacks have affected school communities, violating the fundamental right to education in safe conditions.
