News Colombia.

The tranquility of the municipality of Cajicá, Cundinamarca, has been altered since the morning of Tuesday, August 12, 2025, when Valeria Afanador Cárdenas, a 10 -year -old girl with Down syndrome, was reported as missing. The youngest, student of the Los Laureles country gym, was captured by security cameras at 10:30 am while walking towards an area of shrubs next to the fence that borders the Frío River. From that moment, there has been no trace of it.

Valeria’s family has not ceased a second in her search, clinging to the hope of finding her. To them have added relief agencies and residents of the sector, who tirelessly travel the area.

Since the day of their disappearance, three days have passed without news. The Cundinamarca Fire Department, under the command of Captain Álvaro Farfán, confirmed that after intense operational ones have ruled out in 95% that the girl is in the Frío River, an area where much of the work was concentrated during the last days.

Massive operations and increased reward

The Mayor’s Office of Cajicá initially offered 20 million pesos as a reward for information that leads to the whereabouts of the child. However, the figure was increased to 50 million pesos by the governor of Cundinamarca, Jorge Emilio Rey, who confirmed the expansion of the search perimeter.

«We have traveled a radius of almost 4 kilometers upstream and downstream of the Frío River. Now we will expand it to 6 kilometers, using drones with thermal capacity and reinforcing the reward for 50 million pesos, hoping that this helps us find Valeria, ”said Rey.

The operation has the participation of the Prosecutor’s Office, the Gaula, Firefighters, Civil Defense and the Community, adding more than 400 mobilized people and the use of drones, divers and other specialized equipment.

Valeria’s disappearance has generated a wave of solidarity in Cajicá and neighboring municipalities. Neighbors, volunteers and authorities continue to add efforts, in a race against time, to gather it again with their family.
