The arrest of former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo on December 7, 2022, would have been a reason for Jair Bolsonaro not to move forward with the coup attempt. This was the assessment of Lieutenant Colonel Sérgio Cavaliere, from the Army, one of the 37 indicted for the attempted coup d’état in 2022. According to the Federal Police, this is also the assessment of a kind of “Disinformation and Attacks Center on Electoral System”.
“And the president will not embark alone because the same thing could happen as in Peru. He has a decree ready, he signs it and then no one goes and he goes to prison. So you won’t risk it (…)”, the officer stated, according to the PF, in an audio recording on December 20, 2022.
The Peruvian president was removed from office and arrested after a failed attempt to carry out a coup by announcing that would close Congress.
According to the PF investigation, on the same occasion, Cavaliere replied to Colonel Gustavo Gomes: “nothing will happen” after being asked if there would be “something new on the front”.
He regretted that the Army High Command did not join the coup and that the Navy accepted, but would need the participation of another Force, as “it cannot handle the beating it will take alone”.
Cavaliere also attacked members of the High Command. “Our leaders, trained in that school of prostitutes, right, for choosing a side, their personal side, to the detriment of the people.”
