As reported by Colonel John Edward Guerra Manso, commander of the Twenty-Third Brigade of the National Army, and Lieutenant Colonel José Augusto López Saavedra, deputy commander of the Nariño Police Department, The troops acted after receiving intelligence information and complaints from the local community.

These indicated the presence of armed individuals who, allegedly, intimidated the population and made extortionate payments.
The offensive military operation allowed the location of the individuals, identified as members of the residual organized armed group Segunda Marquetalia, Iván Ríos Structure, which crime in this area of southwestern Colombia.
During the clashes, an alleged leader of the group lost his life, although his identity is still pending confirmation by forensic medicine. In addition, A second individual was captured and placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authorities.

At the scene, the troops seized two long weapons, two short weapons, 587 rounds of 5.56 mm caliber ammunition, 23 9 mm caliber cartridges, two motorcycles and communications equipment, in addition to quartermaster material associated with this armed structure.
The National Army stressed that these actions are part of its commitment to protect sovereignty and guarantee security in the southwest of the country. “We will continue developing operations that allow us to neutralize the illicit activities of organized armed groups in Colombian territory“said Colonel Guerra Manso.
The community hopes that these actions will contribute to improving security in Ricaurte and its surroundings, where extortion and threats have generated fear in the population.
