The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Michael Johnsonwill promote an “aggressive” schedule for Donald Trump to receive in April, in his first 100 days of government, a multi-million dollar bill on immigration and tax reduction, the congressman himself declared this Sunday.
Johnson and other Republican lawmakers in Congress are eager to help the incoming president implement his campaign promises, which include a unprecedented spending on border securitybusiness deregulation, boosting energy production and raising the US debt ceiling.
But with a new very narrow majority in the House of Representatives and similarly tight margins in the Senate, Democratic opposition could hamper those efforts.
Johnson said he has outlined a strategy with Trump to combine several Republican priorities into a sweeping bill that could advance through Congress under so-called reconciliation rules.
Such a tool allows budget-related bills to pass the 100-member Senate with a simple majority, rather than the 60 votes traditionally required.
“We can put it all together, in a big vote for or againstwhich can save the country, literally, because there are so many elements at play,” Johnson told Fox News.
“That is why we are going to be so aggressive to get this approved in the first 100 days” of Trump’s administration, he stressed.
Johnson said his goal is to get an initial vote in the House on the bill approximately April 3. He also hopes it will then be approved by the Senate and signed into law by the end of the month.
According to Johnson, the bill would include funds to strengthen controls on the border between the United States and Mexico and deport undocumented immigrants.
