MIAMI, United States. – Wrestler Mijaín López established himself as a definitive legend on Tuesday by defeating fellow Cuban (nationalized Chilean) Yasmani Acosta by a score of 6-0 in the 130 kg category.

Lopez, who won her fifth consecutive Olympic gold on Tuesday, had already won the same event in Beijing, London, Rio, Tokyo and Paris. No one in the history of the Olympics had ever achieved such a record.

Acosta, for his part, gave Chile the silver medal and became the first representative of the South American country to win an Olympic medal in this discipline.

On Monday, Lopez defeated Azerbaijan’s Sabah Saleh Shariati in the Greco-Roman wrestling semi-final by a score of 4-1.

The four-time Olympic champion from the Island also defeated South Korean Seungchan Lee at 9:00 am in the round of 16, with a score of 7-0, which allowed him to advance to the quarterfinals.

Shortly after, at around 10:30 am, López defeated Iranian Amin Mizazadeh, the current world champion, 3-1, which ensured his qualification to the semi-finals.

The Cuban athlete, originally from Consolación del Sur, Pinar del Río, in addition to being a five-time Olympic champion, has been crowned champion in four editions of the Pan American Games and has been a five-time world champion.

Beyond his sporting career, López is a staunch defender of the Castro dictatorship and recently became known as a repressor at an international event.

In 2023, the wrestler attended the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile as a “cheerleader” for the Cuban delegation, as he decided to withdraw from the competition after not reaching optimal form in his preparation.

So, Lopez made the news when He attacked a fellow countryman resident in Chile for carrying a flag with the phrase “Freedom for Cuba” during the celebration of the baseball tournament.

The incident in question occurred after the clash between Brazil and Cuba, which ended with the former winning four races by two. Members of the Cuban delegation, led by Mijaín López, attacked the young man to take away his flag.

Damián Montes de Oca Iglesias, the Cuban who was attacked, said that at no time did he shout or say anything against any member of the Cuban delegation.

“I didn’t get involved with anyone or shout anything, I was just standing there with my flag. They came at me and he gave me the cookie. They came to give me a cookie without me getting involved with them,” he said.
