Santo Domingo.- When commemorating the 24th anniversary of the death of Jose Francisco Pena Gomezthe Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) and its president, Miguel Vargas Maldonado, highlighted the great love that the historical leader of that organization felt for the Dominican people.
During a mass at Las Mercedes church, in the Colonial Zone, Vargas explained that Peña Gómez’s magnificent career was always guided by his commitment to the best interests of the Dominican nation.
“This celebration of this mass is an example of what José Francisco was. Here he took refuge in search of peace, giving forgiveness and, above all, recognizing the need for each Dominican to be able to travel freely and democratically in the country, ”he said.

Vargas added that with said act the PRD seeks to pay tribute to the life and political exercise of the outstanding leader of the masses.
“We are here remembering an extraordinary human being, that great Dominican, that humble, simple, sensitive, supportive man and, above all, with a deep vocation for service, always thinking of people first.”
On his side, Peggy Cabral widow Peña, recalled the attributes that marked the life of one of the most important political leaders the country has ever had.
She pointed out that her husband was “a man committed to peace, to fraternity and to the well-being of the people.”
The mass was officiated by the priest Frankeli Rodríguez and was attended by April Peña and Coral Peña, Peña Gómez’s daughter and granddaughter, respectively. Important leaders of the PRD also attended.
Acts in Mao
Engineer Vargas Maldonado explained that the PRD leadership would immediately move from the Las Mercedes church to the municipality of Mao, Valverde province, Peña Gómez’s homeland, to unveil a statue that reflects his physical image in life.
He added that they would pay homage there, as part of the official acts in celebration of the life and career of Dr. Peña Gómez.
