Miguel 'Miki' Torres: "“What we are at risk in 11 weeks is something dramatic for our country.”

The situation is practically in your hands.

I see with sadness, frustration and annoyance what Mr. Jerí has led us to. The first thing I have to do is obviously raise my voice of complaint. We must tell the President of the Republic that the assignment was clear: you came in to address a situation of insecurity that is terrible, but above all to give us stability that allows for transparent elections.

It was the minimum.

It’s the minimum. But the scandal to which the imprudence, to say the least, of Mr. Jerí subjects us is a wound not only for him and for all those involved, but evidently for Peru. Because the only thing Peru is asking for is order and stability. Did you know? We want to arrive well. There are 11 weeks that are separating us from the election and in which we are going to play the next five years. And so, the truth is that yes, we are outraged and annoyed. We have made a decision. We are not joining the voices of vacancy and censorship, but with a very clear warning: investigations must continue.

Those of the Prosecutor’s Office and journalism.

We applaud the work that journalism is doing. And we support that all research continues. Obviously, in Congress and in the Prosecutor’s Office they have to advance this entire process. I hope that President Jerí keeps his word to request the lifting of the secrecy of his communications and to have absolute openness because, truth be told, the answers and support he has given have not convinced. They generate more shadows than lights.

Some answers insult intelligence.

Of course. It’s a complicated decision. We are not going to join the voices of the left, those who love disorder and chaos.

Is it populism?

It is electoral calculation everywhere. For us the simple thing would be to shout and ask for his head. But, for a moment, let’s think calmly. The average citizen is desperate due to insecurity. And that hurts and outrages. So, to that population that feels forgotten and completely excluded from the State, we also add these types of problems. I think it’s not fair.

How do you interpret what happened? Youth, anger, blackmail or negotiation?

It is clear that Mr. Jerí’s explanations are insufficient, vague, contradictory and generate very high doubts. But it also gives me the certainty that here those who are celebrating are those who enjoy the chaos. Who enjoys chaos? The caviars. The caviars are happy. Not only the left, but now also the populist right. It is impressive how they already began to rub their hands saying: “Oh, let’s see, where does the presidency fall now?” They’re shuffling names! Oh my god, this is not a game. We are talking about something super serious. The investigation should not stop. And, while it lasts, please stop touching figures. It is a mechanism that should always be used in an emergency situation. And of course, (they say) “does that mean that you are not going to do absolutely anything?” If something appears…

There is talk of an audio where money is talked about.

If evidence appears with a flagrant crime, something that cannot be supported; If not, what is appropriate is to investigate. Politics is not only doing what is convenient, but what is appropriate. What is necessary.

Are there other control mechanisms?

Always the figure of changes of ministers can provide some type of institutional solution.

It seems that the prime minister does not want to continue.

I am not sure if it can be done in this case, because it is something so personal, so typical of President Jerí’s attitude. The responsibility can hardly fall on any of the ministers. We must demand results from ministers. Especially in security and economy.

If this continues, the voter will vote with abandon.

Obviously, in crises the first victim is Peru and its citizens. Please, to President Jerí and his ministers: forget about your private lives. Forget about your dark agendas that are not transparent enough.

Why is it different from the case of Dina Boluarte?

As soon as Dina Boluarte entered, we said: “It’s over.” With Nano we proposed not once, but twice, the advancement of elections so that absolutely everyone could leave and we could make a healthy restart. What happened? We are left alone. All other parties are conspicuous by their absence. Fuerza Popular was left alone. And so, we said “let’s respect what the Constitution says.” That lady was not to our liking. We campaigned against them. We warned them, “No Pedro Castillo, no Dina Boluarte.”

The narrative is that you continue to govern.

Ah, the caviars are champions. They place the interpretation. They create chaos and hatred, and then irresponsibly leave us with the problem. How about rennet! Because if we are in the situation we are in, it is because of what the left of our country left us. That’s what we have to understand. We are emerging from the chaos, disorder and disaster that the left gave us. And it has to be done by putting order. It will be necessary to be cautious, but also accompanied with great attention, about what happens in these 11 weeks that we have left until the national elections.

Is Keiko Fujimori going to speak out?

Keiko has already started the campaign. I believe that it is up to Keiko, and actually all the candidates, to talk about the proposals.

Were there clashes with Fernando Rospigliosi?

No, on the contrary. We are proud to wear it, no longer as a guest, but as a militant. Fernando, with Marco Miyashiro and General Astudillo, lead a top-notch security team. Two heroes and a former Minister of the Interior.

Astudillo is the Chavín quota, like José Williams.

Well, Astudillo entered. Let’s make the reservation. And he refused to hand over command to Castillo. And when we talk about order we also refer to order within the State. What we face in 11 weeks is something dramatic for our country. Peru can’t take it anymore.

Did you see José Domingo Pérez’s podcast? It confirms his political bias, in case there were any doubts.

No, I haven’t wasted my time that way. If he walks like a cat, meows like a cat and eats like a cat. Every person harmed by it has every right to take action. And we are evaluating whether the party also initiates legal action.
