The Minister for Regional Integration Policies of the Dominican Republic and Secretary General of the United Left Movement, Miguel Mejía, described as inappropriate the pronouncement of President Luis Abinader regarding the July 28 elections in Venezuela, during his speech before the National Assembly.
Miguel Mejía said that, by referring to the situation in Venezuela, the head of State violated the solemnity of the space and the convocation. According to Mejía, the statement was inappropriate, since the situation mentioned does not concern the Dominican Republic. He also recalled that in the Assembly there were representatives of states with different schools of thought and government regimes.
“The statements were inappropriate in an inappropriate environment, where the solemnity of making that pronouncement was violated,” Mejía emphasized.
Mejia recommended “prudence”
The minister stressed that, although each person has the right to form an opinion, a ruler must maintain due prudence to avoid falling into interference. According to Mejía, during his speech after taking the oath of office for his second term, Abinader committed an imprudence that could have been avoided, preserving both the country and himself.
“I am not questioning the right of the president or the country to form an opinion on what is happening in Venezuela. I am not asking the president to put on the red beret of Chavismo, but neither am I asking him to adopt the position of the coup plotters. He should simply preserve the country and himself as an entity of moderation, without interfering in these matters,” Mejía continued.
Abinader and his position on the elections in Venezuela
During his speech, Abinader He again demanded the publication of all electoral records, their verification by impartial institutions and respect for the result emanating from the will of the Venezuelan people.
