Miguel Díaz-Canel was a witness in the trial against Alejandro Gil, reveals the former minister's sister

The second trial against former minister Alejandro Gil would be focused on the crimes of embezzlement and economic nature.

LIMA, Peru – The second trial against the former Minister of Economy and Planning of Cuba, Alejandro Gil Fernández, concluded this weekend on the Island marked by the secrecy of the Cuban regime and the lack of official communication with the population.

This Saturday, journalist Mario J. Pentón from your Youtube channel offered new details of the judicial process based on an interview with the lawyer and former Cuban television presenter María Victoria Gil, sister of the former minister.

The first trial against the former minister was held from November 11 to 13 in the court at 100 and 35, in Marianao, on the grounds of the charge of espionage. This second event, focused on crimes of embezzlement and economic nature, would have taken place between November 26 and 30, with a view to the next sentence.

María Victoria Gil reported that among the high-profile figures who participated in the trial, the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel stood out, who appeared as a prosecution witness.

“A witness for the prosecution is a witness for the prosecution,” clarified the former presenter. “I wonder how it is possible, a friend, a brother, like Miguel Díaz-Canel was, people who were one. My sister-in-law told me: ‘They adore each other, they cannot live without each other.’

Maria Victoria Gil He commented that the presence of the Cuban dictator seeks to clean up his damaged image nationally and internationally.

“He is capable of betraying himself as a man, I am no longer going to speak as a politician. As a man, betraying himself and appearing against my brother as a prosecution witness in a trial for corruption. I find it shameful,” he stressed.

The process, which involved more than a dozen defendants, including other alleged high-ranking officials within Castro’s power, has made Alejandro Gil Fernández the main scapegoat. According to the former presenter, the positions of these “important people” have been “disappearing” along the way. “There are only a few loose threads left, at small levels,” he commented.

In the interview he also highlighted the possible confiscation of the former minister’s house in Miramar, one of the most exclusive areas of Havana. The confiscation has been handled in the trial behind closed doors and María Victoria Gil assures that, if carried out, it would be an arbitrary action, since the property was handed over by the Castro State and not the result of illicit activities.

The crimes attributed to Gil Fernández – including embezzlement, money laundering, bribery and influence peddling – are related to his time as manager of the maritime insurance company Caudal in the United Kingdom. During that period he lived in London with his wife and children and had access to benefits typical of senior executives, such as a luxury car and membership in an exclusive Miramar club. According to his sister’s version, these privileges were part of the state structures to manage capital outside Cuba and did not constitute personal criminal activities.
