Migration for the Darién displaced 93% in the first 23 days of January, Panama reports

The Panamanian government reported that until January 23, the flow of migrants that the Darién has experienced a 93%decrease, compared to the same period of the previous year.

The Ministry of Public Security of that country published this Friday, January 24, a statement in which it specified that in the first 23 days of the month there was 1,710 people. He recalled that last year 23,099 entries were counted. According to the Panamanian entity, the decrease is 21,389 migrants compared to the previous year.

In the middle of this month the government of José Raúl Mulino appeared that there was a downward trend at the crosses. He pointed out that from 1 to 14 of the month, 9.002 migrants who crossed the jungle had been counted. However, Lurgo reported that an error was presented in the statistics, which led to the revision of the total of 1,710 migrants in the first 23 days of this year.

“In the follow -up to” firmness plan “and according to the statistics collected, until Thursday, 1,710 irregular migrants had entered the country, mostly Colombian, Venezuelan, Ecuadorian and Indian nationality. He added that «during the first six months of the management of President Mulino and Minister Abrego, from July 1 to December 31, 2024, there had already been a significant decrease in the entry of irregular migrants, which reached an annual accumulated reduction of the 42% compared to 2023. The closure of the trails fell last year the entry of migrants to 302,203, after in 2023 520,085 entered, a difference of minus 217,882 people ».

In December, the director of the National Migration Service From Panama, Roger Mojica, reported that a total of 305,549 migrants, mostly Venezuelans, crossed the Darién jungle in 2024; This figure being 41% less than the one evidenced in 2023, when 520,000 people were reported.

Mojica, in statements to the EFE agency, indicated that by analyzing the migratory flow between the two years mentioned, a reduction of 210,554 migrants through the Darién was seen. In his opinion, this is due to the policies implemented to reduce traffic through that step.

«The package of measures, the measures taken by the National Border Service, the administrative measures, the climate has also favored us, the change of policies. It is a set of everything that is reflected in the decrease in migratory flow, ”said the official.

The data presented by Panama since José Raúl Mulino assumed power indicates that, of the total number of migrants, about 209 thousand 070 are of Venezuelan nationality, which represents 70% of the accounted for the figure; followed by 17,456 Colombians (6%); 16,466 Ecuadorians (5%); 12,366 Chinese (4%); 11,932 Hatians (4%) and 33,259 from other countries (11%).
