President Gabriel Boric announced, within the framework of his visit to the Arica and Parinacota region, an investment of $2.3 billion to develop a biometric registration plan at the border and pointed out that regional migration services will be strengthened with greater powers.
“We want a migration that occurs in an orderly, safe manner, that we know who is entering and that we recover control over the borders that unfortunately was lost in recent years,” said the President from the Chacalluta border complex.
“These processes (border control) are not achieved overnight, we have to do it with a human rights perspective. Many times they are families in a desperate situation, but we are not going to allow crime to sneak in through these loopholes”, added the head of state.
“We know that migration is part of our history and that as a society we will always defend inclusion, human rights, cultural and labor exchange, which we know has given important returns,” he said.
He also emphasized that “we cannot resolve this situation in the north of Chile alone, we require cooperation at the regional level and I believe that a great example of this is the opening of this border crossing, which was achieved through constant coordination with Peru.
