MIAMI, United States. — The proximity of tropical storm Ian in the Caribbean region has not stopped the illegal maritime departures of Cubans heading to the United States.
This Sunday, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) reported on the rescue of two vessels that were trying to reach US territory.
The authorities of that federal agency warned that it was a maritime incursion of maximum risk due to the proximity of tropical storm Ian.
“Don’t jump into the sea during a tropical storm. These people are lucky to be alive,” the Coast Guard said in its Twitter account. Twitter.
That agency also reported this Saturday on the repatriation of 28 Cuban migrants who had been detained in previous incursions this week.
The rafters were returned to the island by the crew of the Paul Clark Cutter, who in recent days had already deported another 46 Cubans.
From October 1, 2021 to date, the US Coast Guard has repatriated 6,052 migrants from the Caribbean island.
“We have lost 64 people at sea this fiscal year, the crews are doubling their efforts to ensure that number does not increase,” said a spokesman for that agency after the repatriation of the rafters.
