Mieres and the general strike

The Minister of Labor criticized the fact that the PIT-CNT did not present an alternative document for the social security reform

The Minister of Labor and Social Security, Pablo Mieres, questioned this Monday the decision of the PIT-CNT to carry out a 24-hour general strike this Tuesday in demand for the social security reform project that will be voted in Deputies.

“I think the entire campaign they are waging against a reform that we understand is necessary is a mistake on the part of the trade union movement. It represents a sense of responsibility of the Government towards the country and especially with the new generations”, said Mieres in dialogue with Underlined.

The hierarch stressed that the project aims to “provide sustainability to the retirement system to ensure that there are better benefits in the future.”

“It is not true that the reform is carried out on the back of the worker, because the contribution he makes will continue to be the same. The number of years that he must calculate to retire as well. The only thing that is modified is the retirement age”, defended Mieres, who highlighted the solidarity supplement for the lowest pensions and the progress towards a single regime that “avoids the privileges that currently exist”.

Regarding the mobilization of the trade union center in particular, Mieres said “that it was coming and they have every right.”

“There is a criticism of the content (of the reform), but without an alternative. They say ‘another reform is possible’, but we don’t know which one. The PIT-CNT participated in the Committee of Experts, received a draft before it entered Parliament and was always on the opposite sidewalk. They never presented an alternative document”, summed up the minister.

Regarding the accession of transport to the measure, Mieres said that he has “the impression that tomorrow will be a day in which there will be activity because people are not here to lose days of work.”

“It seems to me a mistake to throw yourself against a reform that is for the good of all Uruguayans,” he concluded.
