A total of B/. 1,103, 335.20 received the onion producers of the province of Coclé for payments for the purchase of 26,270.60 quintals of this item.
This was reported by the Minister in Charge of Agricultural Development, Alexis Pineda, who highlighted the work and dedication of Coclesano onion producers, during the delivery ceremony held at the MIDA Onion Drying Plant in Coclé.
The delivery of checks for the purchase of onions by the IMA benefited some 148 producers of the Coclesana Association of Onions (ACOCEB), and the Association of Producers of Onions and Other Items of Panama (APROCYRPA), which received from the Minister in Charge , its legal personality.
ACOCEB was given a check for B/. 539, 447.40, as payment for the purchase of 12,844.70 quintals of onions, benefiting 84 producers; while Aprocyrpa was given a check for B/.563,887.80 as payment for 13,425.90 quintals of onions acquired by the National Government, benefiting 64 producers.
Pineda thanked the producers, on behalf of the President of the Republic Laurentino Cortizo Cohen and Minister Augusto Valderrama, for continuing to produce food for the Panamanian people, despite the pandemic, rise in fuel and fertilizers and supplies.
He added that the onion industry was in decline when he took over this administration and that little by little it has recovered. He reiterated to the producers his support and his commitment to continue producing, “agriculture is essential and agriculture does not stop.”
The Director of the Institute of Agricultural Marketing, Carlos Rognoni, who also attended the delivery, highlighted the work and effort of the onion producer from Cocles, who is raffling it against the adversities of time and, despite this, they have been able to produce 26,000 quintals of onions of excellent quality, which was acquired with the teamwork of the entities of the National Government.
Novey Calderón Peralta, president of ACOCEB, thanked the National Government for strengthening the agricultural sector, especially the onion sector. He said that today the payment process for a good quality onion is culminating, since at the time of its harvest, the producer was concerned because at the time of its sale it did not have a sustainable market.
