Michael Chen: ‘The highest unemployment rate in the country is in Colón, between 20% and 30%’

The president of the Chamber of Commerce of Colón, Michael Chen, spoke this Monday, on Radio Panama, about the indefinite strike that continues in the province due to the lack of responses from the Government in terms of social improvements.

He emphasized that this strike has lost the confidence of investors internationally. “Eight days of strike have affected logistics, food distribution. We cannot continue with strikes, because the situation has been tightened by Covid and now we are making it worse,” he specified.

He added that after the meeting they held last week with President Laurentino Cortizo, the population was left with a great disappointment, which he considered to be serious.

Chen stressed that businessmen have invested in Colón, however, this situation has prevented them from moving forward.

“28% of the businesses in the Colon Free Zone have closed forever, this directly influences the amount of employment that these businesses generated. The highest unemployment rate in the country is in Colon, between 20% and 30% “, remarked the president of the union.
