SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- The Miami Beach Municipal Commission has unanimously decided to name 13th Street after the Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan.
According to a press release from Local 10, the stretch between Meridian Avenue and Ocean Drive will soon be named Gloria Estefan Way.
The proposal was made in September 2023 by the Miami Beach Women’s Commission. The organization proposed renaming a street to honor Gloria Estefan, recognizing her impact on music and her community.
As a Grammy-winning artist and longtime Miami Beach resident who co-owns the Cardozo Hotel with her husband Emilio Estefan, the singer’s legacy will be celebrated with her street.
Gloria Estefan was honored in 2024 with an exhibit at Lummus Park during Women’s History Month, showcasing “Ten Female Superstars” in the entertainment industry.
“These women have defied conventions, broken barriers and left an indelible mark on the music industry,” she told Local 10 Lynette Long, president of the Miami Beach Commission for Women.
Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez emphasized the importance of these recognitions by noting that only one other street in Miami Beach was named after a woman, Barbara Capitman.
The commission also approved the committee’s recommendation to name 12th Street between Ocean Drive and Washington Avenue Naomi Wilzig Way. Wilzig is an American collector of erotic art and founder and director of the World Museum of Erotic Art in Miami Beach.
“Not only is she representative of our community for her global erotic museum, but she was also an advocate for Holocaust survivors and very generous to our community,” curator Kristen Rosen Gonzalez said of Wilzig.
Recently, Gloria Estefan received the prize Legend at the Billboard Latin Women in Music 2024 gala.
Last year, the Cuban-American singer-songwriter and producer made history by becoming the first Latina woman to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The ceremony was held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York, where Gloria Estefan was accompanied by her family and husband.
This award “is something incredibly special for me, and I want to thank so many people for listening and giving me the joy of being able to communicate through music. It is the most beautiful gift that anyone could give me,” said the singer during the gala.
He also said that “music saved his life” when his family was forced to start a new life, referring to their exile when he was 16, the age at which he emigrated to the United States. “Music was my therapy,” he said.
