The Ministry of Environment (MiAMBIENTE) has launched the Azuero Verde project in the El Montoso Forest Reserve, with the aim of restoring degraded ecosystems and arid lands of the Azuero Peninsula, a region severely affected by climate change and the intensive use of pesticides.
Environment Minister Juan Carlos Navarro stressed the importance of Azuero Verde as a priority project in his administration, because it not only seeks to restore natural heritage, but also to generate economic opportunities for residents of the region. He also emphasized that environmental protection is essential for the well-being of the population.
Project coordinator Juan Carlos Monterrey said that Azuero Verde marks a new beginning for the peninsula and invited companies, producers and organizations to join the initiative.
The project focuses on five fundamental pillars: restoring watersheds, creating biological corridors, promoting the green economy, rehabilitating protected areas and generating sustainable economic opportunities for the region.
The Azuero Peninsula has faced serious environmental problems, such as the degradation of its ecosystems, the decrease in water availability and the loss of biodiversity due to the excessive use of pesticides and deforestation. These problems have been exacerbated by climate change, putting the well-being of local communities at risk.
The project has received support from Banistmo, the first company to invest in the mission, as well as non-profit organizations such as the ProEco Azuero Foundation and San José de Pesé. Pesé Mayor Yesenia Alfonso praised the initiative as an example of how environmental restoration can be combined with economic development to benefit the local population.
