The Ministry of the Environment went to the Juan Díaz river, in response to a fact reported through the media to verify the situation caused by a dark stain on the bed of said waterway.
During the technical inspection carried out by personnel from the institution, it was observed that at the Macello company, a 500-gallon bunker fuel tank spilled its contents, which exceeded the containment basin and reached the water resource.
The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP), the entity in charge of fuel and chemical spills in the country’s water and maritime sources, also appeared at the site.
The company immediately proceeded to implement its contingency and remediation plan.
The Ministry of the Environment has initiated an administrative process ex officio and the company was given a summons to make a statement on the facts at the Metropolitan Regional Office.
