Mexico’s debt exceeds 50% of GDP by growing 5 points in 2024

According to figures from the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), the debt of the pubic sector went from 14,864 billion pesos in 2023 to 17,551 billion, that is, that one year increased 2,686 billion.

The federal public sector debt is made up of the federal government debt plus the obligations of the direct budgetary control entities, of the public companies of the State and their subsidiaries, and the development bank, says Treasury in its debt report of the fourth quarter of 2024.

At the end of 2024, the balance of public sector financing was divided into 74.9% by internal debt, and 25.1% by external debt.

Thus, the financial cost (the payment of interest and services for this debt) added 1,150 billion pesos, which represented an increase of 5.1% compared to the closure of 2023. The amount is only 300,000 million pesos less than everything Public money allocated to pension spending (1,454 billion), the cost of debt is greater than the entire budget for physical investment that added 1,034 billion.
